About Andrea Brown

Andrea Brown is a mixed media artist. She is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design (Textiles and Glass), and she has studied abroad in the south of France at The Ecole des Beaux Arts (Painting and Sculpture).

Working with diverse materials, both sculpturally and two-dimensionally, is what inspires Andrea. Much of her sculptural work uses found materials and many of her flat work pieces use pre-existing surfaces to paint or draw upon such as vintage linoleum, animal feed bags, or dollar store posters. Andrea’s most extensive body of work, called Woven Paintings, involves using a large loom where she weaves tactile canvases made of measuring tape, film strip, electrical wiring and other unconventional linear material. These canvases are painted using an earthy yet bold palette, akin to her love of nature and digging in the dirt. Living for many years in New York City, her work is influenced by the people who were a part of her daily life. Such cultures as the West Indies, Haiti, and Indian Asia weave into her colors and imagery. Ms. Brown’s work has been exhibited in many galleries and museums throughout her career.

When not working in her studio, she has taught Art/English/ESL, and likes to also make  theater sets and Mardi Gras House Floats. She has recently moved to Lawrence, KS from New Orleans.
